Calendar Color Key

Red = Holidays and dates when no lessons or classes will be offered.

Monday holidays observed by schools and banks (i.e. Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc.) may or may not be observed on a student by student and holiday by holiday basis.

Purple = Deadlines for turning in forms and applications or signing-up for competitions, programs, harp camps, or festivals.

Green = Concerts, harp events, or Studio Class.  Students should attend these concerts featuring harpists (sometimes your teacher is performing), and everyone in the studio is welcome and encouraged to attend our monthly Studio Class.

Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 3pm:  Austin Chapter of the AHS Fall meeting and short concert at Karmen Suter's home.  You do not have to be a member to attend and harp students and parents are welcome - fell free to bring a snack and meet other local harpists of all ages.  Please ask me for directions.  Click here for a pdf file 2006-07 membership form.

September 15-17, 2006:  The Gulf Coast Harpers Sixth Annual Harp Retreat in Fayetteville, TX.  The retreat features a competition, classes with Evelyn Castiglioni, harp ensemble, a jam session, and concerts.  Registration $50 before September 1, 2006 or $60 after September 1, 2006.  For more information contact Debby Carlson at 713-466-3540 or email Debby.

September 23, 2006: Deadline to register for High School All-Region Orchestra Auditions You must be registered for this by your school’s orchestra or band director - I can NOT register for you.

Sunday, September 24, 2006 at 3pm:  September Studio Class.  The studio ensemble will rehearse and all students auditioning for all-region orchestras should plan to participate in a mock audition.  Harp ensemble music is available from me and repertoire will be cumulative, meaning each month we will rehearse new music as well as pieces previously assigned.

STUDIO RECITAL  Saturday December 9, 2006 at 2pm:  Featuring harp students from the studio of Kela Walton and select flute students from the studio of Karmen Suter, the Holiday Combined Studio Recital & Party will be held at the Towne Square Community Center in Steiner Ranch (12550 Country Trails Lane, Austin, TX 78732).  Students participating in either the Holiday Harp Ensemble or the Flute and Harp Ensemble need to arrive no later than 1pm.

Winter Break: December 18, 2006 – January 6, 2007 ~ no lessons or classes (Exception:  I will offer lessons during the first week of January to students preparing for competitions, auditions, UIL, or other performances.)

CONCERT  Friday, April 13, 2007: The Austin Chapter of the AHS presents a Youth Harp Ensemble Concert at Westlake HS.  All middle school and high school harp students are eligible to apply to join the Youth Harp Ensemble.

2pm-4pm Sunday June 3, 2007: Harp Maintenance & Care Workshop Please choose one date and email me to register.  Topics will include string replacement (demonstration and practice), harp cleaning, harp moving, getting your harp ready for a regulation, and Questions & Answers.  The workshop is free if you sign up in advance and will be held at my studio.

June 17-23, 2007: Houston Baptist University's Summer Harp Festival 2007 in Houston, TX with Kimberly Snaufer DeRosa, director; Therese Honey, instructor; and Richard DeRosa, instructor.  In intense but non-competative week of harp study for harp students in grades 6th-12th.  Classes include: Ensemble, History of the Harp, Harp Around the World, Famous Harpists, Careers and "Gigs", Maintenance, and Theory and Rhythm.  The students will perform a concert on Saturday June 23, 2007.  For more information go to http://www.houstonharp.com and click on HBU Festival.  I have applications and brochures available.

June 28-30, 2007: Harp Journeys at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston, TX.  Designed for adults who enjoy playing lever and/or pedal harp.  A Three-day journey exploring the world of harp with ensemble playing and workshops studying a variety of musical styles crossing times and lands.  Presenters include John Gearhart, Therese Honey, Kimberly Snaufer DeRosa, and Louise Trotter.  For more information go to http://www.houstonharp.com and click on Harp Journeys.

July 4 - 15, 2007:  The 2007 USA International Harp Competition in Bloomington Indiana.  This competition is held once every three years and is open to all harpists ages 16-32 as of July 1, 2007.  Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2007.  Application forms and rules available at http://www.indiana.edu/~harpcomp/

July 5 - 21, 2007: Austin Chamber Music Summer Workshop at the Brentwood Christian Academy.  Open to young musicians ages 6 - adult (harp instructor Elaine Barber).  Auditions will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church on Saturday May 12, 2007.  Limited scholarships available, for more information go to http://www.austinchambermusic.org

July 19-22, 2007: The Somerset Folk Harp Festival in Somerset, New Jersey.  The festival is designed to meet the needs of adult folk harp players of all levels of ability. The festival will have an exhibit hall with hundreds of harps for sale; and the schedule includes workshops and concerts by Stephanie Curcio, Nancy Hurrell, Alfredo Ortiz, Ray Pool, Kim Robertson, Tina Tourin, and more.  $50 discount on registration if paid in full before May 15, 2007, fees are not refundable after June 1, 2007.  For more information visit www.harpsomerset.com

Texas State Solo & Ensemble competition (TSSEC)

Deadline for Entry: April 1, 2007.  Contest Dates: ??? To qualify you must have participated in the Region 18 or Region 26 High School Solo & Ensemble competition, and received a First Division rating on a memorized piece from the PML Category/Grade One list.  You must be entered for this contest by your school’s orchestra or band director - I can NOT enter you in this competition.

 

American Harp Society 17th National Competition (2007)

Held at the College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University, Chicago, Illinois during the 7th AHS Summer Institute (week of June 17th, 2007), the competition is open to harpists up to the age of 30 who are national members of the American Harp Society and who are United States citizens or who are citizens of the Americas.  All entry forms and tapes/CDs must be received by April 15, 2007. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS

The 2007 USA International Harp Competition

Bloomington Indiana July 4 - 15, 2007

2007 Summer Camps & Festivals

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lakes, MI.  Blue Lake’s Harp Program provides a focused, well-rounded learning experience for intermediate and high school students. Students spend more than five hours in the harp studio every day, participating in private lessons, harp ensemble, intensive practice, and classes in topics such as music theory, harp history, and performance skills. Pedal and lever harps are provided by the camp. Enrollment is limited to eight students per session, accepted on a first come, first served basis.

The Somerset Folk Harp Festival in Somerset, New Jersey July 19-22, 2007.  The festival is designed to meet the needs of adult folk harp players of all levels of ability.
