This calendar is always in the process of being updated frequently, and please keep in mind that some of the dates may change and new information will be added.  Last updated as of 07/19/2006.

Calendar Color Key

Red = Holidays and dates when no lessons or classes will be offered.

Monday holidays observed by schools and banks (i.e. Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc.) may or may not be observed on a student by student and holiday by holiday basis.

Purple = Deadlines for turning in forms and applications or signing-up for competitions, programs, harp camps, or festivals.

Green = Concerts, harp events, or Studio Class.  Students should attend these concerts featuring harpists (sometimes your teacher is performing), and everyone in the studio is welcome and encouraged to attend Studio Class which begins in the spring semester.

CONCERT     Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 1:00pm - 2 Tone: a jazz harp group featuring Cindy Horstman on harp and Michael Medina on bass, performs at the Jazz 'S Alive Festival in San Antonio, TX in Travis Park (300 E. CONCERT     Sunday, September 18, 2005 at 7:30pm - The Texas Early Music Project performs a concert featuring harpist Therese Honey at the First English Lutheran Church in Austin, TX.  The program includes late 18th century Irish music performed by Therese Honey on Celtic and historical harps, as well as Scottish ballades performed by vocal artists Jenifer Thyssen, Stephanie Prewitt, and Daniel Johnson.  Dessert reception to follow. October 2005

October 1, 2005 at Westwood High School: High School All-Region Orchestra Auditions (check in at 9am).  You must be registered for this by your school’s orchestra or band director by September 17, 2005 - I can NOT register for you.

Sunday, October 2, 2005 at 6:00pm: Austin Chapter of the AHS Pot-luck Supper and Meeting at Lynn Turner's home.  You do not have to be a member to attend and harp students and parents are welcome - bring your favorite dish or desert and meet other local harpists of all ages.  Please ask me for directions.

October 8, 2005 at Grisham Middle School: Middle school All-Region Orchestra Auditions (check in at 8:30am).  You must be registered for this by your school’s orchestra or band director by September 24th - I can NOT register for you.

CONCERT     Monday, October 10, 2005 at 8pm - Audio Inversions: New Music Concert Series, Inaugural concert at the Austin Museum of Art Downtown.  Program to include works by Lou Harrison, Frederic Rzewski, and a sideways nod to a pop culture icon with Michael Daugherty's Dead Elvis.  Performers include: Dawn Lawler and Karmen Suter, flute; Emily Zizza, clarinet; Ben Westney, cello; Kela Walton, harp; Aaron Lack, percussion; and Adam Boyles, conductor.
Admission: $10/$7 at the door.

November 2005

CONCERT     Monday, November 7, 2005 at 8pm - The UT Harp Ensemble will perform at the UT School of Music in the Recital Studio.  A Celtic sampler program, the evening will include music from Wales, Ireland, Brittany, and Scotland.

Saturday, December 3, 2005 at 3pm: Holiday Harp Ensemble rehearsal in Steiner Ranch at 3906 Wharton Ct. (78732) at the home of Adriana Cox.  All students wishing to perform with the Holiday Harp Ensemble must attend.

Sunday, December 4, 2005 at 3pm: Holiday Harp Ensemble and Studio Party at the Towne Square Community Center in Steiner Ranch (12550 Country Trails Lane, Austin, TX 78732).  Students participating in the ensemble should arrive with their harps no later than 2pm.

CONCERT     Monday, December 12, 2005 at 8pm - Audio Inversions: New Music Concert Series, concert at the Austin Museum of Art Downtown.  Program includes works by Evan Chambers, Marcin Bela and Jennifer Higdon.  Performers include Karmen Suter, flute; Joel Bright, French horn; Kela Walton, harp; and Marcin Bela, conductor.  Mingle with the musicians at a wine and cheese reception following the concert.
Admission: $10/$7 at the door.

Winter Break: December 18, 2005 – January 7, 2006 ~ no lessons or classes (Exception:  I will offer lessons during the first week of January to students preparing for competitions, auditions, UIL, or other performances.)

Friday, January 20, 2006: Early registration deadline for Harp Journeys - a festival in Houston, TX in February.  Harp Journeys is designed for adults who enjoy playing lever and pedal harp, and offers workshops on a variety of musical styles and aspects of playing the harp as well as a chance to experience the fun of ensemble playing regardless of ability.

Students Please Be Aware: The first half of March involves a lot of travel for me, so lesson schedules may vary (we may have to be flexible and creative with scheduling).

April 2006

April 1, 2006: Deadline for students (who qualify) to enter the Texas State Solo & Ensemble CompetitionYou must be entered for this contest by your school’s orchestra or band director - I can NOT enter you in this competition.

April 1, 2006 9am-12:30:  Austin Area Youth Harp Ensemble rehearsal at Westlake High School.  Any 6-12th grade harp student, who studies with a current Austin AHS Chapter member, applies to participate before March 20, 2006, and attends all rehearsals is eligible to participate in the Youth Harp Ensemble. CONCERT  Sunday, April 2, 2006 at 7:30pm:  UT Harp Ensemble Concert in the Recital Studio at the UT School of Music.  “Laguna Gloria and the Six Flags Over Texas” features the premier of a harp ensemble work written especially for the UT Harp Ensemble by UT Austin graduate Dr. Rob Deemer.  Admission is Free.

CONCERT  Friday, April 7, 2006 at 7pm: Austin Area Youth Harp Ensemble Concert, under the direction of Ayren Huslig, in the Choir Hall at Westlake High School.  Children and families Welcome.  Donations Accepted at the door.

CONCERT  Friday, April 21, 2006 at 8pm Meisenbach Golden Flute & Harp Duo at St. Austin's Catholic Parish.  Tickets sold at the door: $15 General Admission, $7 Students and Seniors.

CONCERT  Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 7:30pm:  "Synergetic Harp" with harpists Delaine Fedson, Elaine Barber and Jim Pinkerton, Lanny Hilbolt on bass and Rob Fedson on drums, at the UT School of Music Recital Studio.  Program features works by Nadermann, Grandjany, transcriptions by Escosa, and a surprise!  Admission is Free.

CONCERT  Thursday, April 27, 2006 at 7:30pm:  Harp Project and UT Harp Studio Class Recital in the Recital Studio at the UT School of Music.  Admission is Free.

All-State Orchestra Auditions - Information about the music for the All-State Orchestra auditions can be found by clicking here.  To qualify to audition for All-State, high school harp students must have won a spot in the all region orchestra.  PDF files of the orchestral excerpts can be downloaded from the TMEA site, but the etudes must be purchased on your own - please pay careful attention to edition information and tempo markings.  All interested High School students should contact me immediately, and may also obtain etude and excerpt information directly from me.  You must be entered for these auditions by your school’s orchestra or band director - I can NOT enter you in these auditions.

20th Annual Pearl Amster Youth Concerto Competition - Open to all instrumental students 18 years of age or younger who live within a 100 mile radius of the Capital in Austin.  Winners receive an opportunity to perform with the Austin Civic Orchestra and Scholarship assistance.  Applications and pre-screening recordings are due on or before November 8, 2005.  Live Auditions will be January 15, 2006 at the UT School of Music.  Concert performance will be April 1, 2006 at 7:30pm at Bethany Lutheran Church 3701 West Slaughter Lane.  Rules and Applications available online at www.austincivicorchestra.org or please email Pat Surguy dsurguy@austin.rr.com for more information.  Sponsored by the Austin Civic Orchestra.

 

Music Education Auditions and Evaluations (hosted by the Austin Chapter of the American Harp Society

Deadline for Entry: Monday February 20, 2006.  The MEA&E is a two-part program for beginning and intermediate harp students of all ages sponsored by the American Harp Society.  It consists of two auditions held approximately one month apart, where students play 2-3 solos of their choosing.  Because this is a unique two-part program, the focus is especially on the improvement that can be made by participating on both days.  Session One: Sunday March 5, 2006 from 2-5pm - Session Two:  Saturday May 6, 2006 from 9am-noon.  Applications and Information can be downloaded here.

 

UIL Solo & Ensemble Competition (Region 18)

Deadline for Entry: Thursday, January 5, 2006.  Competition on: February 4, 2006 at Lanier High School.  UIL Music Region 18 includes Austin, Bastrop, Pflugerville, Round Rock, Eanes and other local IDS - click here for a complete listing ISDs by UIL music region.  You must choose your piece or pieces from the UIL Prescribed Music List (see me or your band/orchestra director for a copy of the list).  You must be entered for this contest by your school’s orchestra or band director - I can NOT enter you in this competition.

 

Texas State Solo & Ensemble competition (TSSEC)

Deadline for Entry: April 1, 2006.  Contest Dates: Saturday, May 27 & Monday, May 29, 2006 at UT Austin, Texas State, and Connally HS.  Entry Fees: Solo - $15.00 per contestant, Ensemble - $7.50 per contestant (entry fees may or may not be paid for by the school orchestra budget).  To qualify you must have participated in the Region 18 Solo & Ensemble competition, and received a First Division rating on a memorized piece from the PML Category/Grade One list.  You must be entered for this contest by your school’s orchestra or band director - I can NOT enter you in this competition.
